🍀 Meet the Players

Cherry, Tim, Cartoon (l-r)

You’re having a blast, laughing with new friends at a bar in Bangkok or Pattaya. Someone suggests a game. Connect 4, Jenga, Pool, maybe even some local dice game you've never seen before.

Sounds harmless, right? Free fun!

That’s what I thought too… until I realized "free fun" can quickly turn into "buying endless drinks for an opponent who somehow never loses." I’ve promised more free rounds than I care to admit to ladies named Cherry and Cartoon, all while wondering how they seemed invincible.

Want to avoid my mistakes and keep your baht where it belongs (in your pocket)? Then you need to know the secret strategies (and distractions) of Thailand’s best bar game hustlers.

🔴 Connect 4: The Silent Killer

Connect 4

You probably played this as a kid. Drop your colored tokens, get four in a row. Easy peasy.

Your winning chance as a newbie? About 1%.

Seriously. Why?

  • Decades of Practice: While you last played this in elementary school, Ploy has been playing it daily for years. She’s practically a Connect 4 Grandmaster.

  • Sober vs.… Not: You're sipping Singha. She's "sipping" a lady drink that's often just juice. Guess who's sharper?

  • Scientific Strategies: These ladies know the proven winning strategies and common traps. You’re just hoping for the best (and distracted by her smile).

My Golden Connect 4 Rules (Learned the Hard Way):

  • Center Control: The first player in the center column has a huge edge. If you go second, and she opens in the middle, block that center power early.

  • Two-Way Trap: Learn to build "two threats at once"—lines where she can only block one, leaving the other open for your win.

  • The "7-Shape": This sneaky move creates three in a row with a support piece, setting up a double win you won't see coming.

My #1 Tip: Don't play Connect 4 for drinks. Just don't. Unless you enjoy buying drinks for someone else all night.

🗼 Jenga: The Wobbly Wallet Risk

Jenga

A tower of blocks. Pull one out, and put it on top. Simple. How can anyone cheat at that?

Your winning chance? Maybe 25%.

Jenga in a Thai bar is less about physics and more about psychology.

  • The Distraction Game: Expect flirts, tickles, light touches. Thai women are fiercely competitive, and they know how to break your focus.

  • Subtle Shifts: A seemingly innocent bump of the table can send your carefully balanced tower tumbling.

My #1 Tip: Stay laser-focused. Don't touch the table. Place your drink away from the action. Treat that Jenga tower like a ticking time bomb.

👕 Dress like a Winner: 12 Tim Travel Taste Shirts

12 funny & cool T-shirts for the smart Thailand Insider: Good Ploys Only, Butterfly Man, Say no with your Shirt (Mai Ao), tell her you remember her too and celebrate the best streets in Thailand. Plus 6 more designs: My Ploy is different, Ping Pong, 8-Ball, Sick Buffalo, Muay Thai, Handsome Man.

Take a look at all of them here.

🎱 Pool (8-Ball): More Than Just Balls & Pockets

8-Ball

Most bars have a pool table. You probably think you’re decent. Think again, champ.

Your winning chance? Around 10%.

  • Pro-Level Players: Along with Connect 4, pool is often where Thai bar staff excel. They've played thousands of games.

  • The Winning Distraction: As soon as you start sinking balls and look like you might actually win, the "distraction tactics" kick into overdrive. More flirts, more "accidental" bumps, more jokes. She might even position herself right in your line of sight.

My #1 Tip: Play pool to get better, not to win drinks. And for the love of all that is holy, never play drunk. You might damage the table, and that bill will be far worse than buying a few lady drinks.

🎲 High Low: Addictive Baht Burner

This dice game is all luck, but oh so addictive. It’s fast and fun, and before you know it, you've promised five drinks for five rounds won.

Your winning chance? 50% (but your losing-money chance is way higher).

The goal is to clear your shaker of dice by rolling "1s" and passing "6s" to your opponent. It's exhilarating!

My #1 Tip: Let her teach you for several rounds without any bets. Get a feel for the speed and flow. Only then, if you dare, put a low-stakes bet on it.

✌️ There’s one more risky game: Jackpot

Another dice game. It’s played with a wooden box with small pieces that can be opened. Initially, they read 1 to 9. When all are turned over, they read “.Jackpot." I believe it’s called "Shut the Box" in the rest of the world.
