Hello, welcome! Take a look inside kaa. Here's what I have for you today:
Why you'll never wear regular pockets in Thailand again.
How to become a carefree traveler.
The $19 shorts rule I follow.
I'm on a longtail boat heading to a beach in Krabi.
The boat hits a wave. I grab the side rail to steady myself.
And I watch—in slow motion—my hotel room key slide out of my shorts pocket and disappear into the Andaman Sea.
Gone. Just like that.
Now I get to spend the rest of the day wondering if the hotel is going to charge me 1000 Baht for a replacement key. Spoiler: they did.
But that's nothing compared to what almost happened the week before.
Walking through Chatuchak Market in Bangkok. 15,000 stalls. Wall-to-wall people. Squeezing through crowds, bumping shoulders, ducking under tarps.
I reach for my phone to check Google Maps and... it's not there.
Full panic mode.
I retrace my steps. Fifteen minutes of cold sweat. Finally find it on the ground near a t-shirt stall—screen cracked, but functional. Some kind stranger had spotted it but didn't know whose it was.
Lucky. Very lucky.

Here's what I learned:
Regular shorts are a liability in Thailand.
The heat means you're wearing shorts constantly. But regular pockets—the open kind—are basically "please take my stuff" invitations. Not because of theft. Because of physics.
You bend over to look at something. Stuff shifts.
You climb into a boat and hit a wave. Stuff flies.
You're dancing at a Full Moon Party and suddenly your phone is in the sand somewhere and you'll never find it.
Regular pockets weren't designed for this life.
Zippered pockets were.
Phone? Zipped. Can't fall out.
Cash? Zipped. Can't slide out when you sit weird.
Hotel key? Zipped. Can't sink to the bottom of the ocean.
You zip once, forget about it, and actually enjoy your day instead of patting your pockets every 30 seconds like a paranoid maniac.
Moral of the story is:
The right gear removes problems you didn't know you had.
You don't think about pockets until something falls out of them. Then you think about nothing else.
Zippered pockets aren't fancy. They're not expensive. They're just... solved. One less thing to worry about in a country full of experiences you should actually be paying attention to.
Now, how does this apply to you?
If you're packing for Thailand, skip the cargo shorts from 2009 and grab something with zippered pockets.
Here's what I wear:
Nineteen bucks. Lightweight mesh fabric—perfect for 35°C humidity. Zippered side pockets that actually fit a modern smartphone. Don't look like "outdoor gear" so you can wear them anywhere—temples, markets, beaches, bars.
I pack two to three pairs. Rotate and wash. That's it. Two weeks, two months—same shorts.
If you want to stop worrying about your pockets and start enjoying Thailand, this is the move.
Chokdee!
