🇹🇭 Hello, welcome! Take a look inside kaa. Here's what I have for you today:
You've walked past the Pattaya city seal a dozen times without looking at it.
Look now.

Pattaya Seal
The Thai script on top reads "Pattaya".
The script on the bottom reads "Chonburi Province".
Blue water and sky. Yellow beach.
And a guy who looks like a cowboy. On a horse. Purple dress, slippers.
It’s the Gulf of Thailand behind him.
You can see Phra Tamnak Hill on the right. Where the Pattaya City sign is today.
Looks like someone photoshopped a Western onto a beach postcard.
Truth is: The guy on the horse isn't a cowboy.
And it is definitely not T. G. “Cowboy” Edwards, the retired American aviator who opened the first bar in the now infamous Bangkok alley Soi Cowboy in the early 1970s, which was named after him.

T. G. “Cowboy” Edwards
His name is Phraya Tak. The world knows him as King Taksin the Great.
Here's what went down.
In 1767, the Burmese army was about to crush Ayutthaya, the old Thai capital. Phraya Tak grabbed 500 soldiers and rode east to regroup and build a new navy.
Somewhere around modern-day Pattaya, his crew ran into a local warlord named Nai Klom. Nai Klom wanted a fight.
The free printable plan seniors can't stop talking about.
Then he saw Phraya Tak sitting on his horse with 500 disciplined troops behind him. He surrendered on the spot. No fight. No blood. Just joined the army.
The Thais started calling that piece of land "Thap Phraya." Means "army of the Phraya."
By the way: You can find the word "Thappraya" on the map. It’s the name of the street that leads from Pattaya’s 3rd Road to Jomtien’s 2nd Road.

Over time, Thap Phraya got slurred into "Phatthaya." Then into "Pattaya."
The literal meaning of "Phatthaya"?
It's the name of the wind that blows from the southwest to the northeast at the start of the rainy season.
Pattaya. Blows. I don’t make this up.
Chokdee!
