❤️ How I Fell In Love With Bangkok

Before I came to Thailand, I had already been to 37 other countries. For many years I didn’t want to visit the land of smiles because everyone went there.

Do you remember the movie "The Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio? When it came out in 2000, I was 21 years old. Back then, it seemed like the whole world packed their bags and flew to Thailand. And me? I went to South America and Africa. It was good. But now I know that I've missed out on more than 30 years.

When I finally arrived in Bangkok, I took a shower in my hotel, walked down the Old Town’s Soi Ram Buttri, and took a seat at a street food restaurant. Which I thought was quite brave at the time, because, like everyone else, I had the usual concerns about the safety and quality of the food and absolutely no desire for spending my vacation in the bathroom.

But I sat down. Ordered. Ate. Ordered more. Ate everything. And stayed for twelve hours. 12 hours! I had lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner, and a late-night snack. 10 beers in between.

Does your car insurance cover what really matters?

Not all car insurance is created equal. Minimum liability coverage may keep you legal on the road, but it often won’t be enough to cover the full cost of an accident. Without proper limits, you could be left paying thousands out of pocket. The right policy ensures you and your finances are protected. Check out Money’s car insurance tool to get the coverage you actually need.

A neighboring massage parlor charged guests 5 baht to use the restroom. My seat remained the same, but my tablemates changed every 20 minutes. I sat next to shy Japanese women, loud Englishmen, and drunk Germans.

Tuk-tuks drove by; the reigning street dog king occasionally restored order. The souvenir lady with the wooden toy that sounds like a frog. The Thai waiters couldn't believe how much Thai food and Singha beer one man could consume (“Oh, mister 10-beer man“).

Incidentally, during those first twelve hours in Bangkok I ate papaya salad, grilled chicken, prawns, fish in a salt crust, and mussels.

It felt like I had arrived in heaven. The food was breathtaking, the beer ice-cold, and the people around me were from all over the world. Everybody was happy. Everybody acted as if they found paradise. As if we all had won the lottery.

Because this is how Thailand makes you feel. It’s like an instant coffee for your soul. It fuels your heart with joy and happiness. And it feels like a dream: harmony, fantastic food, smiles everywhere, the scent of barbecue in the streets, gentle and kind persons, no rush, and no bad vibes. Sounds like Woodstock. Nothing wrong with that. And the price tags! My part of the bill was $17.

That introduction to Thailand changed my life forever. I became a person who wanted to be a better person. For real. Thailand makes you smoother. Because it demonstrates in so many ways that Karma isn’t a bitch—if you treat Karma right: treat people the way you want to be treated. Easy. Tough. But easy in the end. Because it makes your life so much easier.

That’s why traveling and eating are two of the best things you can do in life. And when you are the foreigner in a foreign country, food is the easiest way to get in touch with the foreign culture—and the people.
